UN Urged to Ensure Freedom of Expression and Opinion in Tibet

On 18 June 2015, the International Campaign for Tibet issued a statement on freedom of expression in Tibet at the 29th session of the UN Human Rights Council. The statement highlighted that in Tibet “almost any expression of cultural or national identity can be characterized as ‘splittist’ and ‘criminal’ with harsh punishments imposed.”

ICT highlights Enforced Disappearances in Tibet at the 27th Human Rights Council Session

The latest session of the U.N. Human Rights Council opened in Geneva on September 8. The International Campaign for Tibet (ICT) has urged the new High Commissioner for Human Rights, Zeid Al-Hussein, to seek to visit China and Tibet during his tenure. In a letter to the new High Commissioner, ICT also pressed for an end to the increasingly widespread use of extra-judicial detentions and torture as a means of silencing Tibetans.

China on the defensive as 11 countries challenge its policies in Tibet

Eleven countries spoke up to urge China to improve the human rights of Tibetans at the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva on October 22. The delegates cited the lack of religious freedom, minority rights, and access of UN officials to Tibet, and called on China to resume dialogue with the Dalai Lama, during oral questioning at the second Universal Periodic Review (UPR) of China’s human rights record.
