The government of Nepal banned a public celebration of the Dalai Lama’s birthday in Kathmandu on July 6, further undermining the human rights and civil liberties of both Tibetans and Nepalese citizens who revere the Dalai Lama as their spiritual master.

China’s ongoing, systematic human rights violations in Tibet have again been raised at the current session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva.

The International Campaign for Tibet (ICT) is gravely concerned about the future of the UNESCO World Heritage-protected site the “Three Parallel Rivers,” which is facing numerous threats due to extensive hydropower projects, mining activities that are opaquely reported and expanding infrastructure projects connected to resource extraction and energy production.

At a meeting of the European Parliament’s Tibet Interest Group (TIG) in Brussels yesterday – the last in the Parliament’s 8th term – the International Campaign for Tibet expressed its deep appreciation for the determined and sustained support of its members for the Tibetan people, and its hope for the group to be reinstated in the next term.

A Tibetan man and his aunt were imprisoned in Kardze Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan, after he recited prayers and called for the release of the 11th Panchen Lama Gedhun Choekyi Nyima.

The just-concluded visit to Tibet by US Ambassador to China Terry Branstad is significant because it reaffirmed the United States’ three fundamental positions on Tibet (dialogue to resolve the conflict, religious freedom for the Tibetan people and access to Tibet), but it must be followed by concrete action, said ICT in a statement released today.
